Flashing Silicon Labs EFR32 Series 2 with FlashRunner 2.0

SWD support for Silicon Labs’ secure wireless MCUs, reaching Flash, DataFlash and Secure OTP areas through the Debug Challenge Interface.

SMH Technologies offers comprehensive support for the Silicon Labs EFR32 Series 2 family, a generation of high-performance wireless microcontrollers based on Arm® Cortex®-M33 cores. Designed specifically for secure, low-power IoT applications, EFR32 Series 2 devices are optimised for RF performance, hardware security (including Secure Vault™) and energy efficiency. They are a natural fit for smart metering, home automation, industrial IoT and connected health.

The FlashRunner 2.0 series — FlashRunner 2.0, NXG and HS — is engineered to meet the demands of production-level in-system programming (ISP). With full support for the SWD protocol, FlashRunner provides a fast, secure and highly configurable programming solution for EFR32 Series 2 devices in modern manufacturing environments.

Protocol and interface compatibility

Silicon Labs EFR32 Series 2 microcontrollers are programmed over SWD, a streamlined two-wire protocol from Arm’s Debug Access Port architecture. FlashRunner 2.0 supports SWD completely, giving efficient and reliable in-system programming with a minimal pin count — an ideal match for the board layout constraints of compact or RF-sensitive designs.

FlashRunner automates the entire SWD session, including device detection, memory mapping and handshake initiation. This allows seamless communication with internal flash and configuration memory areas without additional tools or host-side intervention, and extends to Flash, DataFlash and Secure OTP areas through the Debug Challenge Interface (DCI).

Benefits in production programming

  • Optimised flashing performance via direct SWD integration and device-specific programming algorithms.
  • Flexible setup compatibility, supporting both standalone and multi-channel programming in complex production scenarios.
  • Full automation of the flashing cycle — connect, erase, program and verify — with no need for host-side interaction.

Together these shorten production cycle times and make programming results more consistent.

Conclusions

As demand grows for secure and efficient wireless microcontrollers, Silicon Labs EFR32 Series 2 devices are becoming central to next-generation IoT systems. SMH Technologies works closely with Silicon Labs so that FlashRunner 2.0 continues to deliver optimised support for current and future members of the EFR32 family. Through continuous updates to our flashing algorithms and support for evolving debug and security architectures, your programming process stays efficient, reliable and scalable.

As connected devices evolve towards new protocols, stronger security and smarter edge computing, programming tools have to evolve with them. FlashRunner 2.0 is built with that future in mind, offering the performance, flexibility and dependability required by the most advanced embedded platforms in the industry.
